Vino Paisano, Squarebird, Larry Watson’s T-bird
Words by Brandon Flannery.
It’s a crisp fall day. You are fortunate enough to be a teenager in southern California, and you like cars. Magazines are small enough to fit in your Science book and the people in them are from your neighborhood. Up and coming builders, painters, and stripers hang out at the same places as you. Maybe you have your ride parked at the hub of it all, a drive in called the Bellflower Clock. You’ve done okay for yourself: Your car is chopped, the interior has been redone in tuck-n-roll, the emblems are gone, and you’ve swapped your hubcaps and torched the springs. The spotlights and lakes pipes set you back a few dollars, but they are in place. Your frenched headlights have “scallops” flowing from them, as do a few other areas of your car. People dig it, your girl is pretty, and you are turning the radio dial to take the static out of the latest Elvis song. Things are good.
